INEC Kicks Off Preparations for 2026 Osun Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has launched preparations for the 2026 governorship election by displaying the official Notice of Election across all 30 local government offices and the Modakeke Area Office.

During an expanded stakeholders’ meeting in Osogbo on Wednesday, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Mutiu Agboke emphasized INEC’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and professionalism.

He noted that credible elections depend on the support of stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, media, civil society, religious groups, and people with disabilities.

Agboke announced that Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will begin nationwide on August 18, 2025, with online registration available at www.cvr.inecnigeria.org.

Registrants can generate a slip online and complete biometric capture at local government offices starting August 25.

The INEC Voter Enrolment Device (IVED) will facilitate CVR, while the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be used during the election.

He clarified that the Electoral Act 2022 remains in effect unless amended by the National Assembly.

Agboke urged stakeholders to combat vote-buying and violence, describing them as threats to credible elections.

“The electorate must reject vote trading, and youths should avoid being used as tools for violence,” he said, noting that both offenses are punishable under the Electoral Act.

The election timetable, released by INEC headquarters on May 27, 2025, schedules party primaries and dispute resolution from November 24 to December 15, 2025.

Submission of candidates’ particulars (EC9) and nominated candidates’ lists (EC9B) will occur from January 15 to February 9, 2026, with access codes available from December 15, 2025.

The state has 332 registration areas/wards and 3,763 polling units. He called for ongoing dialogue to curb vote-buying and violence, stating, “These practices harm our democracy, and we must address them in our campaigns and meetings.”
