Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada, representing Nasarawa West in the 10th Senate, has confirmed his defection from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
The announcement, made to State House correspondents, marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking to reporters, Senator Wadada stated, “The happenings in the SDP may not warrant my continuous stay in the party, and so, I’m on my way out. I could even say that I am APC, though I have not officially moved, but I am APC.”
He emphasized that his decision was not due to any grievances with the SDP, which he said had not offended him, but rather a response to current political dynamics.
“Dynamism of life makes it imperative for everything in life to be dynamic,” he added, reflecting on his political journey that previously included roles as a national financial secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and an early member of the APC before its formal establishment.
Wadada’s defection comes amid reported tensions within the SDP, particularly following the recent move of former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai to the party.
The senator criticized El-Rufai’s shift, questioning its motives given El-Rufai’s prior support for Tinubu’s APC candidacy in 2023. “What changed in President Tinubu between the time El-Rufai supported him and now that he has defected to the SDP?” Wadada asked, describing El-Rufai’s move as driven by personal ambition rather than ideology.
The senator also expressed strong confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership, asserting that no opposition party, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or PDP, would have the political space to challenge Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
