IGP Bolsters By-Election Security with AIGs, CPs Across 13 States

Ahead of the by-elections scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of senior police officers to ensure a secure and seamless electoral process across 13 states in Nigeria.

The deployments include Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to oversee security operations in Jigawa, Edo, Ogun, Oyo, Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna, Kano, Taraba, Kogi, Niger, Enugu, and Zamfara.

These officers will support state police commissioners in maintaining order and safeguarding the electoral process, according to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Ogunjobi.

The by-elections, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), will take place in 16 constituencies, including two senatorial districts in Anambra and Edo, five federal constituencies in Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo, and nine state constituencies across Adamawa, Anambra, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Zamfara.

The elections were necessitated by the resignation or death of serving national and state assembly members.

To ensure a hitch-free process, the IGP has also deployed officers from the Police Mobile Force, Special Intervention Squad, Force Intelligence Department, and other tactical units.

Additionally, a restriction on vehicular movement will be enforced from midnight to 6:00 pm on election day in the affected local government areas, with exemptions for essential services such as INEC officials, accredited media, electoral observers, ambulances, and firefighters.

Egbetokun further reiterated a ban on security aides and escorts accompanying VIPs or politicians to polling booths and collation centers.

State-owned or private security outfits are also prohibited from participating in election security management.

The IGP urged all citizens to adhere to electoral laws and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a peaceful and fair election, assuring that adequate measures are in place to protect voters’ rights.
