The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has launched a major crackdown on illegal settlements, demolishing the infamous “Cashew Garden” shanties in Apo as part of a broader campaign to sanitize Abuja and eliminate criminal hideouts.
Mukhtar Galadima, Director of Development Control, announced on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, that the razed structures were unauthorized, hazardous, and served as a notorious base for criminals, including drug peddlers.
He emphasized that the land, originally designated for residential development, will be reclaimed, and allocations to owners who allowed illegal occupants will be revoked.
The operation, approved by the FCT Security Committee, signals the start of an aggressive drive to dismantle unauthorized settlements and curb land grabbing across the Federal Capital Territory.
“Abuja will not be a safe haven for miscreants,” Galadima declared, warning that all illegal structures linked to criminal activities will face demolition.
The FCTA’s actions align with broader governance efforts, as seen in recent Federal Executive Council (FEC) discussions led by President Bola Tinubu, where institutional reforms and legal frameworks were prioritized to support national development and security.
