The Edo State Police Command has apprehended a serving police inspector and three civilians accused of brutality, extortion, and armed robbery against Benin City residents.
CSP Moses Yamu, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Sunday, August 17, 2025, following a viral video where a victim alleged abduction, seizure of his phone and belongings, and harassment by police officers.
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika ordered an immediate investigation, leading to the Ugbowo Surveillance Team intercepting the suspects on August 15, 2025, with a silver Toyota Yaris and incriminating items.
Yamu called the officer’s involvement "shameful and criminal,” emphasizing that the suspects would face severe legal consequences.
Commissioner Agbonika stated, “The command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct. Any officer involved in extortion, brutality, or corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted.”
Yamu urged the public, including the victim in the viral video, to provide information to aid the investigation and ensure justice.
The command reiterated its dedication to protecting lives and property, restoring public trust, and maintaining the Nigeria Police Force’s integrity.
