Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised alarm over allegations that Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a former National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, has been denied her discharge certificate, reportedly due to her public criticism of economic hardship under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The claim has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about political interference in Nigeria’s institutions.
In a strongly worded statement, Atiku expressed dismay at the situation, questioning the motives behind the delay in issuing Ushie’s certificate, a critical document required for employment and further education.
“What manner of impunity is this? Everything should not be subjected to politics,” Atiku declared.
“I hope that Ushie Rita Uguamaye’s NYSC discharge certificate is not being withheld because she had the courage to complain about the economic hardship under the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.”
According to Atiku, Ushie completed her mandatory one-year national service without any disciplinary issues, yet, one year after passing out, she has not received her certificate.
He described the situation as “unacceptable” and called on the appropriate authorities to take urgent steps to ensure she receives her due documentation.
The allegations have ignited a firestorm on social media, particularly on X, where Nigerians are demanding transparency and accountability from the NYSC.
Many view the delay as a potential act of retribution against Ushie for exercising her right to free speech, raising broader concerns about the suppression of dissent in the country.
The NYSC has not yet responded to the allegations, and details of Ushie’s case remain scarce.
However, the controversy has amplified discussions about institutional fairness and the protection of citizens’ rights to express grievances without fear of reprisal.
Atiku’s intervention has also drawn comparisons to other recent cases of alleged impunity, further fueling public discontent.
