A tragic aviation disaster struck Russia’s far eastern Amur region on Thursday, July 24, 2025, when an Antonov An-24 passenger plane carrying 49 people crashed near Tynda, leaving no survivors, according to preliminary reports.
The Soviet-era aircraft, operated by Siberia-based Angara Airlines, was en route from Khabarovsk to Blagoveshchensk and Tynda when it lost contact with air traffic controllers just 16 kilometers from Tynda Airport during a landing approach.
Regional Governor Vasily Orlov confirmed that the plane carried 43 passengers, including five children, and six crew members.
The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that a search and rescue helicopter spotted the burning fuselage on a mountain slope in a remote, swampy forest area with no road access, complicating ground operations.
“All necessary forces and means have been deployed to search for the plane,” Orlov stated on Telegram, though initial aerial inspections reported no signs of survivors.
The An-24, built in 1976, was over 50 years old but had received an airworthiness certificate in 2021, valid through 2036.
The crash site, identified by an Mi-8 helicopter from Russia’s civil aviation authority, was engulfed in flames, with debris scattered across a densely forested area.
Russian state news agency TASS, citing emergency officials, confirmed the absence of survivors, marking this as Russia’s first fatal passenger aviation incident since July 2021, when an An-26 crashed in Kamchatka, killing 28.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with authorities noting the region’s challenging weather conditions and the aircraft’s age as potential factors.
Search and rescue efforts continue as officials work to recover remains and investigate the circumstances of the tragedy.
