The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has reiterated the urgent need for the establishment of ranches across Nigeria to address the persistent farmer-herder clashes that have fueled insecurity in various regions.
Speaking at a public forum on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, General Musa emphasized that ranching, coupled with stricter measures against unlawful cattle destruction, could resolve over 65% of the conflicts between farmers and herders.
“In order to address insecurity, two things are basic. We must be able to control the movement of animals across the region. In doing that, it is important we create ranches. Ranches will do a great deal in securing our control and will prevent the conflict between farmer-herder clashes,” Musa stated.
He further urged communities to refrain from killing animals that stray onto farms, advocating instead for their arrest and compensation to herders.
“If we are able to address these two things, over 65% of challenges we have against farmers will be dealt with,” he added.
The call for ranching comes amid ongoing violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and other regions, where disputes over land and grazing rights have led to significant loss of life and property.
General Musa’s proposal aligns with previous government efforts to promote modern livestock management as a solution to the recurring clashes, though implementation has faced logistical and political challenges.
