The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed a warehouse in Kano State containing 88,560 litres of highly concentrated chemicals, including sulphuric and nitric acids, suspected for use in manufacturing explosives.
The discovery was announced on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, by NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, during a press briefing at the facility in Kwakwachi, Fagge Local Government Area.Represented by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Adeyeye revealed that the warehouse held 60,000 litres of 90.5% sulphuric acid, 28,560 litres of 68% nitric acid, and 330 empty jerricans, indicating prior distribution to unknown recipients.
“What we have uncovered is mind-boggling. The volume here is enough to destroy the whole of Kano if mishandled,” she warned, highlighting the severe national security risk posed by the chemicals.
The discovery was made by vigilant NAFDAC officers, but only the warehouse manager was arrested, as the owner remains at large. Adeyeye noted that the owner is not a registered chemical marketer and lacked required permits, including clearance from the National Security Adviser.
“We are interrogating the manager to trace the owner, who must explain how these chemicals were imported and who they were supplied to,” she said.
NAFDAC has vowed to destroy the chemicals safely in line with regulatory standards to prevent misuse.
The agency emphasized that such controlled chemicals are tightly regulated due to their potential for producing explosives, and the incident underscores the need for stricter enforcement of import and distribution protocols.
The investigation continues as NAFDAC seeks to uncover the supply chain and bring the owner of the chemicals to justice.
