The Niger State Emergency Management Agency has said that Emergency disasters claimed more than 500 lives between September 2024 and May 2025.
The agency made this known on Wednesday while briefing journalists on the efforts by the agency to tackle the disasters which ranged from tanker explosions, auto accidents, dynamite explosions and flooding.
The Director General of the agency, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, also shed light on the efforts by the agency to provide emergency relief to the affected communities and surviving victims.
“The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) extends its deepest condolences to the families affected by recent disasters and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents of Niger State through timely and coordinated emergency responses.
“In the aftermath of the September 2024 tragic tanker explosion in Agaie Local Government Area, which claimed 60 lives and left 8 others injured, NSEMA swiftly coordinated search and rescue operations in collaboration with first responders and local authorities. The agency also conducted a needs assessment to inform further assistance
“Another devastating incident occurred in the Diko community on 18th January 2025, where a tanker explosion led to the loss of over 80 lives. NSEMA, in partnership with security agencies and health services, immediately deployed emergency teams to the site to manage the situation, support recovery efforts, and assist the bereaved.
“NSEMA carried out an assessment and coordinated response activities during the Sabon Pegi dynamite explosion that claimed lives and destroyed several houses.”
He added that the State government responded by providing relief materials, including cash assistance to the affected persons.
“Most recently, NSEMA led the coordination of emergency response efforts following the devastating flood in Mokwa which displaced thousands.
“The Agency mobilised resources, deployed response teams, and collaborated with local government authorities and humanitarian partners to provide relief materials and temporary shelter for displaced persons,” Baba-Arah said.
He also listed bandits’ activities in the state as a brewing crisis, noting that the agency was monitoring the situation “NSEMA is monitoring the humanitarian crisis brewing in Rijau as a result of armed banditry which has suddenly resurfaced across Mariga and Rijau LGAs.”
“Bandits allegedly killed scores of soldiers in Niger State when they ambushed them and attacked one of their camps in the state. The military was also said to have killed a large number of the bandits in the attack,” he stated.
The agency which said it was seeking to stockpile relief materials in strategic locations in the state for ease of access during emergencies, thanked the state governor, Mohammed Bago, traditional institutions, community leaders, volunteers, and humanitarian partners for their continued support in building a safer and more resilient state.
