US drones reveal Boko Haram’s movements, new camps

Snippets of the findings of the United States surveillance drones and satellites tracking the over 200 students abducted by the Boko Haram sect in Borno State are beginning to emerge.

Imagery from the drones and satellites shows suspected terrorists setting up temporary camps and moving through isolated villages along bush paths in the Northeast, according to reports from the US.

However, the exact location of the girls, who were shown in a video released early this week by their captors remains unknown.

Washington has shared the imagery with security agencies in Abuja, the Los Angeles Times reported ahead of Saturday’s summit of West African leaders in Paris where strategies to improve cooperation in the fight against the Boko Haram would be discussed.

American officials are said to be frustrated with what they perceived as the inability of Nigeria to act on fresh intelligence about the Boko Haram insurgents.

A US official familiar with the hunt for the girls said Nigeria’s security forces are hampered by poor equipment and training and have failed to respond quickly.

U.S. Defence officials confirmed earlier reports by Nigerian media that Boko Haram had split the girls into several groups after the April 14 abduction.

US officials on Thursday openly expressed their frustration with the planned rescue of the girls at a Senate hearing in Washington DC.

Senator Robert Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he has written to President Goodluck Jonathan asking him “to demonstrate the leadership his nation is demanding.”

“Despite offers of assistance from the United States and other international partners, the Nigerian government’s response to this crisis has been tragically and unacceptably slow,” Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, said at a hearing of his panel.

State Department and Defense Department officials at the hearing said the Nigerian government’s failure to deal with abuses by its own military is a hurdle to U.S. cooperation.

Alice Friend, the Defense Department’s principal director for African affairs, told the committee that even as the U.S. is providing intelligence and satellite photos to help in the search, officials are being “exceedingly cautious about sharing information with the Nigerians because of their unfortunate record.”

  3. Not only nigerians can not fight boko haram, but they dont even WANT to fight it. They know what they are gaining from the insurgency. The only quack is that abduction of school girls was not part of the DEAL. Corruption will kill that country. Our American and Western helpers should be prepared for an unbelievable betrayal by these shameless nigerians.

    2. It is unfortunate that our leaders are failing to show leadership when it matters most. It took the president more than two weeks to speak after the abduction of young girls. Unbelievable. I am sure if it is political issue he Will speak within hours. Selish people.

  4. I suppect a foul play here, if only the Govt will conduct a search with heavy military men without informing anybody even d press will not know about it, that will be the only solution to get those girls, cos I think those children are kept in one imam or alhaji's place who is sponsoring the boko's and I also think anytime the boko's want to make any press release they take the girls to the bush for them to video them and return them back to their hideout. The Govt should use their sense and stop giving out information to the press about the rescue team movement cos t think that is where they (Boko haram) get their plan from. Good morning Nigeria

  5. Our military is too compromised to do anything and the foot soldiers are too demoralized given that their allowances are stolen by the bosses...The big shots have taken over her affairs, compromising information for political gains and the northern/southern agenda. God help Nigeria.

  7. Let the world know fully well that the name called Nigeria is not working , the plain truth is that few individuals are under that umbrella sucking the country`s money with reckless abandon . Our former and present top government functionaries are almost thieves . All the huge bank accounts .luxury cars and houses they have are as a result of stealing they indulged themselves while in office .

  8. The Nigerian Army soldiers remain among the best in the world when it comes to conventional warfare. The Americans sometimes can be big mouthed- crying of rights violation when BH are killing innocent people, which right does the BH killers have?; and CNN and other western media are having a field day because 9ja has not fully developed her war technology, like drones, satelite imaging etc so they can insult our sensibilities. Our solders are by far better than the American soldiers but for the welfare. Check out Nigerians in US army and ask how they are doing.

At last the BH sponsors have achieved their arm, call the dog a bad name so as to hang it. Their reward is near.
