Clinton Blasts Jonathan Over Corruption

Mrs. Hillary Clinton, the former US Secretary of State, has lambasted President Goodluck Jonathan over corruption in Nigeria and the reckless squandering of the nation’s oil wealth.

While speaking in separate events in New York City, Hillary said the Nigerian government under President Jonathan, squandered its oil resources, and indirectly helps corruption to fester in the country.

Clinton, who also expressed her anger over the abducted schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, spoke with ABC-TV’s Robin Roberts on American national television, and also at a public function organised by the International Crisis Group.

Later, the former Senator and First Lady made other critical remarks concerning Nigeria at a philanthropy parley, as she was widely quoted by several American media outlets, including CNN.

Clinton stated the following position in the New York events she attended, challenging the credibility and quality of the country’s leadership under President Jonathan’s watch.

“The seizure of these young women by this radical, extremist group, Boko Haram, is abominable, it’s criminal, it’s an act of terrorism, and it really merits the fullest response possible, first and foremost from the government of Nigeria,” Clinton told ABC-TV.

“The government of Nigeria has been, in my view, somewhat derelict in its responsibility toward protecting boys and girls, men and women in northern Nigeria over the last years,” she said.

“The Nigerian government must accept help – particularly intelligence, surveillance and recognizance help – their troops have to be the ones that (are) necessary, but they could do a better job if they accept the offers that are being made. Nigeria has made bad choices, not hard choices,” Clinton said, parroting the name of her forthcoming memoir.

“They have squandered their oil wealth; they have allowed corruption to fester, and now they are losing control of parts of their (own) territory because they would not make hard choices,” she went on to say.

“The Nigerian government has failed to confront the threat, or to address the underlying challenges. Most of all, the government of Nigeria needs to get serious about protecting all of its citizens and ensuring that every child has the right and opportunity to go to school,” she said in her address to the function organised by the International Crisis Group.

“Every asset and expertise should be brought to bear. Everyone needs to see this for what it is, it is a gross human rights abuse, but it is also part of a continuing struggle within Nigeria and within North Africa,” she added forcefully.

Clinton, often mentioned as the leading Democratic Party candidate in the upcoming 2016 U.S. Presidential election cycle, has not yet announced whether she will run for the White House. Yet, comments from the respected former U.S. Secretary of State do carry political weight beyond American borders.

  3. Ha APC has really worked hard to discredit GEJ government. Past adminitrations did worse and nobody talked only a few activists. Why? Cos there was no strong opposition. Disgruntled politicians with no clear agenda to transform Nigeria that did not feel favoured became opposition. Instead of showing us what they can do, they go about giving false impression and discredting the government. These international reports comes from people here. Assuming APC states created so many jobs for the unemployed in their states it would have reduced the Nigeria unemployment and poverty situation. U see as far as the person is a Nigerian and a politician, there is no difference. Opposition is to make a government work, not to discredit what they are doing. Allow GEJ do his own bit and stop discrediting his government. The situation is veery baaad! But ordinary Nigerians are building houses everyday, so many cars on the road, pple carrying expensive phones e.t.c. Pple will paint a very bad situation to their relations abroad to get money from them and when sure relations come back home they see that these family members are even living bigger than dem. Nigerians need to be patient and appreciate what we have as one country. Some countries are experiencing economic melt down with so many job loss but they haven't blown up the situation against their government. Politicians don't own dis country but they want to spoil it for us for their selfish interest. God help Nigeria!

  16. A country that is not involved in research will neva move forward. When there is a situation in nigeria we set up committe made up of failed past leaders. While in other countries they go to their institutions of learning and reaserch and bring d best minds to look into d matter. Even govt official create a problem in nigeria so that they will set up committe made up of party faithfuls with allocation of funds as sitting allowance. So they now use it as compensation for helping them win election and d elections to come. Why would a former governor of ogun state after saying during his campaign that he is a successful biz that only wants to give good life to his pipo wen he becomes a governor, after 8yrs as governor decided to become a senator instead of going back to his biz? This country shaa. Of all d curroption related issues that has come up since GEJ administration, no single person has been jailed. Lafable country.

  18. The truth must be said even though it is bitter. GEJ has tried to govern Nigeria to the best of his ability but the chair is too big for him. Unfortunately, he is surrounded by sycophants who will never let him into the real situation of thing at all time. The worst enemy he has is his First Lady who has demonstrated nothing but ignoramus and embarrass the whole country several times both locally and at some international fora. We really need change and I personally do not see it coming in the short run unless we the masses rise up against all tyrant leaders in this our dear country.

  22. Clueless is Dr. GEJ is most of his approaches. Why so u may ask? If he does have is head stuck in a bottle of ogoro, why wouldn't he be able to give good leadership to his household and keep his "loose cannon" wife in check and stop causing every citizen of this country bitter embrassment? Someone that can't control his immediate household is saddled with the responsibility of catering for a whole dynamic country like Nigeria.
Truth however is that it is just Dr. GEJ that has failed, we the followers failed even more woefully for ever allowing ourselves to be governed by such a person.
Dr. GEJ, I have no personal grudge with you. But you think not giving a damn about the issues in this country and ensuring you have your share of the cake by stealing all the country's wealth will buy you class and respect?

  29. We must learn to adhere to the truth because truth is better and one must learn to take the bitter that is in the truth! GEJ is doing is best as an individual; unfortunately the culprits that surround him are unwilling to change for the better. They are fully corrupt and unyielding to progress. Mrs. Clinton when she was Secretary of States of America did observed and made comments on corruption in Nigeria. She must have seen that corrupt people had destroyed the economy through corruptions and other vices. She was in positions to know the truth and how to combat it. Let us face reality, the sources of corruption must be totally and permanently closed in other to move the country forward. No right thinking investors will stake a dime or kobo investment in a country that is corrupt. All the billions dollar stacked in overseas banks of what economy value does it generate to Nigeria. Enough of this man inhumanity to man act. Stop corruptions and let move Nigeria's economy forward.
