Nigerian Army ignored warning of Boko Haram kidnap of Chibok girls 4 hours earlier – Amnesty Int'l

Nigeria’s military had advanced warning of the April 14 attack by Boko Haram that led to the kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls but failed to take immediate action, Amnesty International said Friday.

“Damning testimonies gathered by Amnesty International reveal that Nigerian security forces failed to act on advance warnings about Boko Haram’s armed raid on the state-run boarding school in Chibok which led to the abduction,” the rights group said.

Amnesty said it had verified the information about the abduction with “credible sources”.

“Amnesty International has confirmed… that Nigeria’s military headquarters in Maiduguri was aware of the impending attack soon after 7:00 PM (1800 GMT) on 14 April, close to four hours before Boko Haram began their assault on the town,” the group said.

The military however could not assemble the troops needed to suppress the attack, “due to poor resources and a reported fear of engaging with the often better-equipped” Islamists, according to Amnesty.

The 17 army personnel based in Chibok were overpowered by the attackers and had to retreat, the London-based group further said.

“The fact that Nigerian security forces knew about Boko Haram’s impending raid, but failed to take the immediate action needed to stop it, will only amplify the national and international outcry at this horrific crime,” said Netsanet Belay, Amnesty International’s Africa Director for research and advocacy.

  1. WHERE ARE THE GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS. THE MILITARY HAVE ADVANCE WARNING NOT ONLY ON CHIBOK ATTACK BUT EVEN ON GIWA BARRACKS ATTACKS THATS WHY THEIR FAMILY WERE NOT IN THE BARRACK DURING THE ATTACK.

  2. Na which one we go believe. Security forces said they were not given information that students were sleeping in the school. They got another call that made them to redraw from the area and I was wondering if the boko haram pple made dis call so they could strike. Abeg we don tire for the gist here and there. Let the girls be successfully rescued that's what we pray.

  3. Amnesty Int'l does not just report. They investigate before they report. They know the effect of a spurious report and, I believe, wouldn't descend that low. Government should not see the report as intended to discredit it. If true, it could even act as a clue to tracing the sponsors of this deadly game. It should be investigated. Could it be that there was some deliberate delay so the insurgents could carry out their plan?

BUT WHEN BORNO STATE GOVERNOR CALL ON FGN / DEFENSE TO EQUIPT THE ARMY BUT HE WAS EVEN THREATING, YES I AGREE WITH YOU BUT WHEN YOU TOP LEADERS FELLOW MASSES USE TO SEE IT OTHERWISE COS OF DIFFERENCE IN ETHNICITY,RELIGION, PARTY ETC. FOR ME I ALWAYS BLAME THE TOP MILITARY AND I POINT THE FAULT OF THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF JONATHAN FOR NOT DEALING WITH ANY TOP OFFICIAL THAT ARE NOT READY TO FIGHT THIS WAY JUST BECAUSE TRILLION OF NAIRA IS BUDGETTED IN THEIR MINISTRY.
