Nigerian youths make jokes on twitter after Civil Defence commandant embarrassed himself on live TV

Nigeria-600x331

In a recent interview with Channels TV, The Lagos State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), Obafaiye Shem embarrassed himself on live TV as he struggled to give a reply to the question; what’s the website of the NSCDC?

Shem said he would have to ask “his oga at the top” but after persuasion from the presenters he gave a shabby website address that shocked the country. “It’s www.nscdc, that’s it,” he said.

Commandant: the website of nscdc….yes we (inaudible)……the….I cannot categorically tell you one now because the one that we’re….

Anchor1 interrupts

Anchor1: …..see the question is what is your website?

Commandant interrupts

Commandant: waaaaaaaait………

Anchor1: ok

Commandant: the one that we are going to make use of is going to be made known by my oga at the top….yes….I can’t announce one now and the oga says it’s another one that we are going to use…..

Anchor2 chips in

Commandant: the something…..we..we…we cannot have multiple websites but the one that is *coughs* that…that my oga….

Anchor1 & 2 interrupt

Anchor2 chips in

Anchor2: ……..the official website if you want to know about the nscdc, what website do you go to?

Commandant: (interrupts to reaffirm statement) nscdc…yes

Anchor1: that’s it?

Nigerian youths have taken to social media platforms like twitter using the hashtag; #myogaatthetop to create a whole new concept.

Even went as far as making "My Oga At The Top" T-Shirts to mock the Nscdc boss

  3. That's absolute thrash! When the anchors noticed he doesn't seem to know the address, they ought to have covered that up to save the country some embarassment. Nobody is above mistake. I don't see any big deal with that. It could have happened to you or me!

    1. Very true...my thoughts to! D channels crew didn't do well at all. Was d interview intended to embarras d commandant or to inform Nigerians? Dat was very unprofessional.

    2. Exactly what I tot... Since he cudnt answer d question, professionalism permits that he be helped out in some way rather than dwelling on that question. It seemed as though d channels tv crew wer set out 2 embarrass d man rather than reform.. And oh, it was totally unfair too

    3. Why do Nigerians like to "cover up" everything including mediocrity?! Now some of you are blaming the courteous presenters!.Its obvious you don't know the genesis of what the interview was about in the first place because if you do,you wouldn't be taking such a biased and jaundiced view. Not only was he rude and forceful,he practically didn't want to even give the poor presenters a chance to explain to him but thankfully, they persevered.A simple"I don't know or in the light of recent happenings,we are working on a new one,the address of which would be made public very soon"would have sufficed but instead he tried to wriggle his way out of the simplest question asked and place the blame on his boss! Besides, who says "my oga at the top"on National tv for petes sake?! Whatever happened to "my boss,or even my superior"?.Its high time we stop celebrating mediocrity and "covering"things up! Our Nations image is already dented and it won't get any better until half-baked/ literate-illiterates who do not merit the position of power they've been "politically"appointed to,give way to bright people that can move this nation forward!.Remember the biblical verse on"...he that covereth his sins?..."

  10. Dat is wat happen when a position is given to a naive and unqualified person, he probably had no education and he may have got dat position thru godfather i will not be surprise if his OGA is daft like him so incompitent he should resign and someone dat has brain who is not empty take over the job shame....

  11. I agree with anonymous 11.35 PM they would have cancelled the prog when they noticed he wasn't forthcoming . Disgracing a citizen doesn't make you a prefessional . But then again why didn't the defense send an intelligent officer for the interview huh ?????

  12. He should simply have said he could not recollect it at that moment. Would have been better than the embarrassment.

  13. How can he be in control of an organisation and he doesn't kno Deir website. He needs to b demoted and dis shld b a lesson to odas.

  14. It is true the anchor should have covered him up to safe the embarrasement. Nobody above mistake and it is not good to make mockery of people

    1. The media is suppose 2 act as a watchdog for the society, not a cover up 4 d society. So kudos to the presenters...

  15. Why cover him up,when we have sooooo many people who are qualified for the job..what a disgrace!

  16. Embarrassment! Not Deserved to stay more than 24hrs as a commandant. Who do we blame for this mess? When will the youths be given a chance. This was how the senate confirmed and approved a ministerial candidate who could not sing the National Anthem. A very big slap to our 'falling great Nation'

    ReplyDelete
  17. He is a graduate by certificate not education. A commandant by promotion and lobbying not merit. A quota system commandant. There're so many of him all over the place blocking chances of qualified ones.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ww.nscdc.... Loll. He simply shld have dodged the question and feign temporary amnesia.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Some people are saying the presenters should have covered for him, I guess they are all as incompetent as the so called commandant in their various disciplines. If you are used to BBC (Hard Talk) or CNN and the likes you will notice that presenters are looking for lop holes in any interview. Ours shouldn't be different, and they found out this one with "the oga on top". Its quite a shame we have people like these holding such posts in our country. I even teased a friend that works with the NSCDC and he simply replied "monkey de work baboon de chop".

    ReplyDelete
  26. @ anonymous above, Yes agreed, but he should have been smarter than that. a sharp answer would have been, "Unfortunately, I cant recall the web address, i will need to confirm it"

  27. Nobody is there to embarrass anybody, he chose to embarrass himself. Moreover, there is a scam/ fraud going on regarding fake employment in the NSCDC which Channels Tv wants Nigerians to know. Most probably he was trying to cover up some sh*ts in his office. The whole moral of the story is not about making jest of the guy but just to show you that employment scam in the NSCDC is real and the authority is showing no concern in stopping it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would have contributed to this Argument by either blaming the presenter or putting the blame on the ill informed commanandant, but if I do, my oga at the top might be angry so I cannot categorically say anything now till I confirm from him.

  29. although mistakes can be made by anyone, but may God help the right people to get to the top...

  30. I've gone through people's comment but, the truth is -If u must head a command expecially a security outfit, then you should know your onions and not depending on a secondary source for directive. Though, the job is a regimental one but not an excuss for his poor conduct. Infact, he was depending on the presenters to bail him out. So sad that nigeria as a nation is recycling same set of leaders.

    ReplyDelete
  31. They can't be happy, those who magnify the fault of others and minimise their virtues. No thanks to those who think that nscdc is all about grammar and website address. You'd have said L. Messi & C. Ronaldo are incompetent players or that Patience G.J is not a competent house wife, all bcause they don't speak flawless English. If your own daily mistakes are broadcast on tv, it'd be more shameful. 'E pele o', mr Oxford ton dari cambridge.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Gone through all comments and find it so intriguing dat pple can allow sentiments becloud sound judgement. It shldnt be d fault of anyone else dat dis guy made a mistake on tv. For crying out loud, he wz unprofessional in attempting dose questions & he's attracting so much attention cos he's a public figure.Period! I sincerely think we'll only kip 'dreaming' of having competent leaders in dis country if we continually allow sentiments becloud our judgement. God bless Nigeria! We'll get there!

    ReplyDelete
  33. That interview was all about the NSCDC website because frauds were being committed therefrom. An intelligent officer who knows his onions ought to have done a bit of research before granting that interview to enlighten Nigerians on the right website for the organisation.

The Interviewers were right in probing deeper to know which website was the right one - waiting for the info to come "from the horse's mouth".

And, the man's penchant for relying on "my oga at the top" typifies what goes on in our civil and political offices. Employments are based on those that cannot reason on their own. So, you populate the places with dafts, yes-men, and tugs and make sure they all act as zombies. It's a shame and that's not how to build a nation...

    ReplyDelete
  34. But instead of embarrasing him, they should have just asked his oga @ d top. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  35. A man that boasted that his organisation has the best intelligence gathering machine has never visited his organisation's website? In this age? And he is the commandant?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I can say dat d fault is from d commandant,he would have even said dat he can't give out any website at dat moment bcos he may know it but bcos of d scam in d organisatn he might choose to pretend as if he does'nt know it, if he had voiced out he might have been queried by dat his oga at the top by now.let's accept dat he knows what his doing by choosing embarrassement by himself dan to be demoted to junior rank.Even though if it true he does'nt know d wea adrs i can direct u to house of rep and senate many ppl are there til deir 4yrs tenure wil expire dey wil not even stand up 2 second motion talkless of raising motion.anybody dat fall 2 dat victim, what can we say about dat? bcos we voted him or in and we know his or her volcality or fluency.

  40. i bet you'll find out that the majority of those who commented may not be able to sing the second stanza of the national anthem when in a similar seat as the commandant and faced with porous and unprofessional anchors like channel tv. They would"nt have dwelled more on that question. This is just dramatis personae shikena.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Some have food but cannot eat... some can eat but have no food.... oh my dear commandant, you do not deserve to be there... what a shame

  42. ppl let’s put sentiment aside. Wen \Condoleezza Rice had ordinary lipstick smear on her teeth it was publicised and made fun with on CNN in August last year. Did channels or the presenter edit the interview? Or is it not what the man said that was shown? Later you complain that the country is not progressing. How will it progress wen positions are flooded with unintelligent ppl like my oga on top? the truth is that he is not the only one. we have seen senators who cannot recite the national anthem

    ReplyDelete
  43. Though i don't blame him or criticize him either, but whenever you find yourself in an ugly situation its a matter of using your brain, we all make mistakes but instead of trying to prove smart a simple "i can't remember" would have bailed him out. Its time to go for a solid and effective change in Nigeria. Nigeria shouldn't drown like this. We are the GIANT OF AFRICA.
