Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, Thursday, called on Nigerians and key players involved in the policy formulation of the nation to cast off the insinuation in some quarters that the activities of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, were comparable with the agitation by people of Niger Delta.
He pointed out that the underlying factor behind the agitation of the zone was clear to the country and even the world, insisting that Boko Haram was yet to tell Nigerians the reasons behind their gruesome activities in various parts of the country.
The governor made the observation while receiving in audience the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major General Sunday Idoko, who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Abakaliki.
He said: “People normally draw comparison with the Niger Delta situation but I think there is nothing similar between the two. In Niger Delta, people have been agitating as far back as 1957 over marginalization. When oil was discovered three years later, in 1960, oil spillage and degradation of the environment compounded problems.
“So it was the people that reacted and called the world’s attention and focus to their suffering but that was not the case with Boko Haram insurgence.
“I believe the sooner we appreciate that, the better. Those who are behind it should expose themselves and if they are surrendering, I believe the nation will give them amnesty but to talk of negotiating with them, I ask myself, what are we negotiating for?”
