IT was kudos for Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, yesterday, in Benin by an appreciating people as he gave account of his three years stewardship in office, just as the younger brother to the Oba of Benin and Enogie of Obazuwa, Prince Edun Akenzua, endorsed him for a second term.
Prince Akenzua, while publicly endorsing the governor for yet another term after listening to the governor give his score-card on the occasion of his 3rd anniversary in office, said: “Having listened to your report, there are still things to be done. I give you pass mark. As our steward, we are going to re-appoint you for a second term to work for us.”
The Chief Priest to the Oba of Benin, Chief Nosa Isekhure, urged the governor to sustain the tempo of developments in the state.
Oshiomhole had earlier given account of his achievements in office in the past three years to include massive construction of roads, rehabilitation and building of schools, provision of potable water, health facilities and provision of employment to over 25,000 persons, among others.
He explained that he assumed office at a time the state resources in terms of revenue was so low but with high expectations from the people, adding that with commitment and re-focusing from his administration, the fortunes of the state have been turned for the better.
He said: “We insisted that the only option opened to us was to collect the taxes belonging to government and fromN300 million, we have raised the IGR to over NI.6 billion.
“If we can sustain this effort, it will increased to N2 billion.”
When I assumed office on November 12, 2008, the revenue of the state had dropped to N1.6 billion due to the world economic crisis while IGR was N30 million bringing the total to N1.9 billion. Our wage bills and over head cost stood at over N200 million and we could hardly pay salaries”
