Alleged N80.2bn fraud: EFCC misfired against Yahaya Bello – Dele Momodu


Veteran journalist, Dele Momodu has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, of “misfiring” in the ongoing case against former Kogi governor, Yahaya Bello.


Momodu said the EFCC failed to do due diligence during their investigation against Bello.


Speaking during an Instagram Live, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain faulted EFCC’s claims of Bello using government funds to pay his children school fees upfront before the expiration of his tenure.


He faulted EFCC’s conduct in its attempt to prosecute Bello, stressing that the commission’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede should have learnt from the cases of his predecessors, who he said were “booted out ignominiously”.

Ex-FCMB manager gets 121-year jail term over diversion of customer’s N112m



The high court in Anambra has sentenced Nwachukwu Placidus, a former First City Monument Bank (FCMB) branch manager, to 121 years imprisonment.

 

The ex-banker was jailed on Friday for diverting a customer’s funds estimated at over N112 million for his personal use.

 

The Enugu zonal command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Placidus in March 2018 on a 16-count charge bordering on forgery, stealing and obtaining by false pretence.

 

He pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.

 

Ohanaeze condemns viral audio saying it wants to apologise to Fulani over 1966 coup



The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide on Saturday described as a wicked and false report that the Ohanaeze was planning to apologize to the Fulani community over the incidents of the 1966 coup in Nigeria.

 

The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, spoke to newsmen in Owerri, while reacting to the viral voice message.

 

According to the President General, “I was shocked to read a voice message  alleging that we held a retreat at Enugu state, and it was poorly attended. The voice message was false, malicious and wicked and in the voice message that we had a retreat and that in the meeting we said we were going to Sultan of Sokoto to apologize to them for the killing of Ahmad Bello and the other things that happened in the 1966 coup.

 

“This did not happen. I did not expect this false report. It was done by one Mr Ugwuh and Obasi. They were making caricatures of me. The next day another record went viral and where the same Ugwuh was saying that what they earlier said was wrong, fortunately, most people who called at that time knew it was fake.

 

Real Madrid win La Liga title after Barcelona defeat



Real Madrid have been confirmed as LaLiga champions for the 2023–2024 season.

 

This follows Girona’s 4-2 win over Barcelona in the late kick-off.

 

Carlo Ancelotti’s men had defeated Cadiz 3-0 at home, thanks to goals from Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham and Joselu.

 

These results mean Real now have 87 points after 34 fixtures.

News of stray bullet hitting journalists one-sided – Kano govt


 The Kano State Government has assured the safety of media practitioners in the state, claiming they are highly protected.

 

The comments are in reaction to the stray bullet incident on a journalist within the premises of the government house.

 

The Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who described the reported incident as one-sided, claimed in a press statement that journalists are not under threat in the government house.

 

He said, “the attention of the Kano State government has been drawn to a one-sided media report on social media revealing that a journalist, with the state-owned television station, attached to the government house was hit by a stray bullet.

 

Sadiq Khan becomes first London mayor to win a third term



Labour’s Sadiq Khan has won a historic third successive term as mayor of London, becoming the first politician to achieve the feat.

 

Khan’s victory was confirmed on Saturday after the final London mayoral constituency of Lambeth and Southwark announced its result.

 

Khan received 106,861 votes (61.2 percent) to beat Susan Hall, his Conservative rival, who got 26,347  votes (15.1%).

 

The British-Pakistani was first elected in May 2016 after resigning as a member of parliament.

 

Sanwo-Olu appoints Kwam 1’s daughter Damilola as SSA



Damilola Basirat Ayinde Marshal, the daughter of Kwam 1, the fuji star, has been appointed as the senior special assistant (SSA) to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos governor, on tourism.

 

The legal practitioner took to her Instagram story on Friday to announce her appointment. She also shared a series of congratulatory messages received from well-wishers.

 

Kunle Rasheed, the spokesperson for Kwam 1, also confirmed the appointment to TheCable Lifestyle.

 

Also, in a now-viral video, the ace singer appreciated Sanwo-Olu for appointing his daughter as SSA.

 

Poverty responsible for insecurity in northern Nigeria – APC chieftain


A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Abayomi Nurain Mumuni says poverty and lack of economic opportunities are the major causes of insecurity in northern Nigeria.


Mumuni who said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Saturday, suggested that a multi-faceted approach be used to tackle the problem.


In the statement signed by his Media Aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni said to address the problem of insecurity in the region, the government must invest in economic development projects, create jobs and ensure infrastructural improvements.


He said other things to be done to tackle the menace in the region are the introduction of social reforms, strengthening of security forces, community engagement and empowerment of women and youths in the region.

‘I love freedom of being single’ – DJ Cuppy


Popular disc jockey, Florence Otedola, aka DJ Cuppy, has relished singlehood.


The 30-year-old revealed that she loves the freedom that comes with being single.


On her X handle on Saturday, DJ Cuppy wrote: “Finally starting to really enjoy weddings, since I turned 30. I love the freedom that comes with being single and not being anybody’s plus one. LMAO.”


Recall that DJ Cuppy’s most recent relationship was her failed engagement to Ryan Taylor.

Govt agencies call me names, convene meetings over my matter – Peter Obi


Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, has alleged that some agencies of the government are now calling him names and organizing town hall meetings over his matter.


Obi, however, said the development does not bother him, adding that many people would be shocked if they knew what he goes through everyday.


The former Anambra State governor made the statement on Friday in Canada while responding to questions about the last general election in Nigeria.

‘Establishment of criminality’ did not allow INEC server work – Peter Obi


 Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, said it was the ‘establishment of criminality’ that made the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, servers not work during the last presidential election.

 

Obi, who insisted that the people must one day make it to work, explained that Amazon testified there were no glitches recorded globally on the day of the presidential election.

Court stops police from arresting APC ward executives behind Ganduje’s suspension


 A high court in Kano has granted an ex parte order restraining the police from “inviting, arresting, and harassing” ward officers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) behind the suspension of  Abdullahi Ganduje, the national chairman.

 

In the ruling on Thursday, Yusuf Muhammad, the presiding judge, also restricted “any attempt by the APC national working committee (NWC), state council of the party and APC acting national chairman from using security operatives to arrest or detain the ward executives”, pending the hearing and determination of motion on notice.

 

“An interim order of injunction is hereby granted restraining the respondents in the two consolidated suits, their officers, agents, privies, or any other officer serving under them from inviting, arresting, harassing or detaining the applicants in respect of the subject matter of the suit, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice already filed,” the judge held.

 

“It is further ordered that interim order for the motion on notice and all other processes in this suit shall be served on all the respondents, timeously and before the next adjourned date.”

 

Banditry now business venture for govt officials – Gov Radda alleges


The Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has alleged that some government officials and security personnel are aiding insecurity, especially, banditry in the country.


The governor made the claims on Friday while featuring on Channels Television’s program, Politics Today.


The governor added that it has become difficult to end banditry in Nigeria, saying it is now a “business venture.”


He said, “Now it has turned out to be a business venture. A business venture for the criminals who are in government; some people who are in security outfits and some people who are responsible for the day-to-day activities of their people.
