US-Convicted Osun Monarch Sues Adeleke to Halt Replacement as Apetumodu

The dethroned Apetumodu of Ipetumodu in Osun State, Oba Joseph Oloyede, who was convicted in the United States on fraud-related charges, has taken Governor Ademola Adeleke to court, seeking to stop the process of filling the vacant stool.

Oba Oloyede is the second claimant in suit number HIF/50/2026. In a motion on notice filed before an Osun State High Court in Ile-Ife, he alleged that the governor did not formally notify him of any offence before beginning steps to replace him.

He asked the court for an order restraining the governor or any of his officials from appointing a new Apetumodu until the main suit is decided.Other claimants in the case are Prince Oyewusi Adewusi, Prince Isaac Adewuni and Prince Abiodun Oyetoro, acting for themselves and on behalf of other members of the Latimogun Royal Family of the Aribile Ruling House of Ipetumodu.

Besides Governor Adeleke, the defendants include the Osun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Afolabi Adedeji (Asalu of Ipetumodu and head of the kingmakers), Chief Adesoye Babalola (Malefon of Ipetumodu), and the Ife North Local Government.

In the motion dated September 16, 2026, Oloyede sought an interlocutory injunction stopping the defendants from taking any steps to fill the stool or appoint anyone in his place pending the final determination of the suit. He also referred to a report in The Guardian newspaper of May 11, 2026, which stated that he had been deposed by an order signed by the governor on May 7, 2026, without lawful basis or prior notification of any wrongdoing.

Hearing of the matter was stalled on Monday because hearing notices had not been served on all parties. Only the claimants’ counsel, O. Ogbewe, and counsel for the fifth defendant, Soji Oyetayo, appeared in court.

Ogbewe told the court that processes had been served on the defendants, but Oyetayo said he had not received a hearing notice. Justice Dapo Adeniji therefore adjourned the case to January 21, 2027, and ordered that fresh hearing notices be issued and served.Governor Adeleke had earlier approved the deposition of Oba Oloyede following his conviction in the United States on tax fraud and money laundering charges.
