Soludo: Obi and I Remain Friends Despite Political Differences

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has stated that he has no personal disagreement with former governor Peter Obi, describing their relationship as cordial even though they hold differing views on political and economic matters.

Speaking in an interview with BBC News Igbo on Monday, Soludo explained that the two families maintain close ties despite their contrasting political interests.“Peter Obi and I are good friends. Our two families are on good terms. His wife gave birth to my child in the divine water, my wife gave birth to his child in the confirmation. But when it comes to politics, give me mine, give him his. It’s politics that is being done,” the governor said.

Soludo noted that their political differences have not damaged their personal bond. He recalled that both men backed different candidates during the Anambra governorship election.“He has someone he thinks should be the governor of Anambra. I am also listening. He supported the person he wanted. But I won by the grace of God,” he added.

The comments come against the backdrop of renewed disagreements between the two men over Obi’s record in office and the financial state of Anambra when he left in 2014.In September, Obi and the Anambra State Government differed over claims that the former governor and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children. Obi had described the families’ relationship as cordial despite political differences.

However, a media aide to the Anambra First Lady clarified that Nonye Soludo is the confirmation godmother to one of Obi’s daughters, while Margaret Obi is the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters.Soludo also addressed his controversial 2022 article in which he questioned Obi’s chances in the 2023 presidential election.

He clarified that he did not predict Obi would lose, but argued that the former governor’s candidacy as a third-force option would split opposition votes and benefit the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Tinubu.

He further revealed that he had personally invited Obi to join the All Progressives Grand Alliance in March 2022 to contest the presidency, saying their early discussions focused on mobilising the Igbo people rather than simply seeking power.
