Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s academic credentials, stating that the President graduated with a first-class degree in Accounting from Chicago State University in the United States.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, Alausa said he was personally familiar with the university and had known several individuals who studied alongside Tinubu during his time in Chicago.
According to the minister, he lived in Chicago for nearly three decades and visited the institution on numerous occasions. He maintained that there was no basis for questioning Tinubu’s educational background, adding that he had met many of the President’s former classmates.
When asked directly whether Tinubu graduated with first-class honours, Alausa responded affirmatively, saying the President earned a first-class degree in Accounting.
The minister also praised Tinubu’s intellectual abilities, describing him as “a genius” and dismissing doubts about the President’s competence and leadership capacity.
Alausa further commended Tinubu’s administration, arguing that the President had helped transform Nigeria’s economy over the past three years. He cited economic growth and reform efforts as indicators of progress under the administration.
However, during the interview, questions were raised about persistent challenges such as poverty and the number of out-of-school children in the country. In response, the minister maintained that the focus should remain on what he described as the President’s achievements in office.
Tinubu’s academic qualifications have remained a subject of public debate, particularly since controversies surrounding records from Chicago State University emerged during the 2023 presidential election tribunal proceedings. The issue returned to public attention in August 2026 when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) began displaying the credentials submitted by candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
