The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on Nigerians to prioritise peace, unity and mutual understanding as the country continues to grapple with various national challenges.
The revered traditional ruler made the appeal on Wednesday while receiving the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, during a courtesy visit to the Sultan’s palace in Sokoto.
Speaking during the meeting, the Sultan emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in nation-building, noting that traditional institutions have a crucial role in fostering peaceful coexistence, national cohesion and sustainable development.
According to him, Nigerians must work together across political, religious and ethnic divides to address the issues facing the nation.
“Peace, unity and mutual understanding are essential for addressing the challenges facing our nation. We must all embrace collective responsibility towards building a better society,” the Sultan said.
He stressed that national progress can only be achieved when citizens unite around shared goals and values, regardless of their differences.
In his response, Atiku expressed appreciation to the Sultan for the warm reception extended to him and members of his delegation.
The former Vice President acknowledged the contributions of traditional rulers, particularly the Sultan of Sokoto, to promoting harmony, national unity and development across the country.
“We appreciate His Eminence for the warm reception accorded to us. Traditional rulers have an important role to play in promoting peace, unity and national development,” Atiku said.
He also reaffirmed the need for Nigerians to work collectively towards building a more prosperous and inclusive nation.
The visit provided an opportunity for discussions on issues of national importance, with both sides highlighting the need for continued efforts to strengthen peace, unity and development in Nigeria.
Also present during the meeting were senior members of the Sultanate Council, including the Wazirin Sokoto, Magajin Rafin Sokoto, Galadiman Garin Sokoto, Sa’in Kilgori and the Secretary of the Sultanate Council.
