Elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have rejected proposals for a coalition with other political parties to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, maintaining that the party is strong enough to secure victory on its own.
The position was made known during a meeting of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Mandate Elders Forum in Akure, where the group’s chairman, Dr Demola Ijabiyi, argued that the APC remains the dominant political force in the state and does not require coalition arrangements to achieve its electoral goals.
The Rainbow Coalition initiative, reportedly championed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, seeks to bring together members of different political parties in support of President Tinubu’s second-term ambition while allowing participating parties to contest other elective positions.
However, Ijabiyi said such an arrangement was unnecessary in Ondo State because the APC already controls the state government and local government structures.
“We recognise the value of cooperation among political parties pursuing a common objective. However, the circumstances of each state must determine the form such cooperation takes,” he said.
According to him, the party sees no reason to relinquish constituencies or sideline its candidates in exchange for support for the President’s re-election.
While rejecting a formal coalition, the APC elders welcomed support from other political parties and groups that share confidence in Tinubu’s administration and its reform agenda.
“Our doors are open to all who believe the President should continue his reforms and development programmes, but support for his re-election should not come at the expense of APC candidates,” Ijabiyi stated.
The APC chieftain expressed confidence that the party could deliver its target of over one million votes for Tinubu in Ondo State during the 2027 presidential election.
He also called on APC candidates seeking National Assembly and state assembly seats to intensify mobilisation efforts within their constituencies and strengthen the party’s grassroots structures.
In addition, Ijabiyi urged women and young people within the party to spearhead door-to-door campaigns, engage voters directly, and promote the party’s message across communities, markets, schools and professional groups.
He stressed that effective voter engagement should be based on the achievements of the Tinubu administration, while addressing citizens’ concerns with facts, patience and understanding.
The APC elders further encouraged party leaders at ward and local government levels to ensure that women and youths play active roles in campaign planning, leadership and voter mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
