INEC says viral poster claiming it reaffirmed Mark-led ADC leadership is fake

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says a viral poster claiming it has reaffirmed the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is fake.

In a post on Friday on X, the commission said the poster, which bears the image of Mohammed Haruna, its national commissioner, has been circulating alongside an accompanying text on social media. However, neither originated from the commission.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wishes to alert the public that a poster and accompanying text circulating on social media, claiming that the Commission has “reaffirmed” a Senator David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), are fake,” the post reads.

“The said poster did not originate from the Commission. The use of INEC’s logo and the image of the National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, in the said publication is unauthorised.”

INEC said it had never issued such reaffirmation, urging members of the public to disregard the publication in its entirety and rely only on information from its official and verified channels.

The development follows Thursday’s judgement of the federal high court in Abuja, which sacked the Mark-led leadership of the ADC and nullified the party’s nomination of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate.

In the judgement, Peter Lifu, the presiding judge, declared the Mark-led caretaker committee of the ADC illegal, ruling in favour of Nafiu Bala, a former national deputy chairman of the party (north-east).

Lifu also invalidated all decisions taken by the party’s caretaker committee, including the nomination of Atiku as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Bala had approached the court to challenge the process through which Mark and other members of the caretaker committee assumed control of the party following the resignation of Ralph Nwosu, the party’s former national chairman.

Bala argued that, following Nwosu’s resignation, he was constitutionally entitled to assume the party’s leadership as the next-ranking official.

He asked the court to nullify all decisions taken by the Mark-led leadership and restrain Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from parading themselves as the party’s national chairman and national secretary, respectively.

He maintained that their emergence violated the ADC constitution and provisions of the Electoral Act.

However, Atiku and the ADC have vowed to challenge the ruling at the court of appeal.
