The Federal Government has launched a virtual teaching programme to link pupils in underserved schools with qualified instructors through live online lessons, aiming to tackle teacher shortages and expand access to quality education.
Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa disclosed the initiative, known as Inspire Live, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday night. He said the platform would allow students in primary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools to join interactive, real-time classes taught remotely by qualified teachers.
Using Kaura Namoda in Zamfara State as an example, Alausa explained that schools without an English Language teacher could simply log on at the scheduled time and join a live lesson.
“Any school, say you are in Kaura Namoda today and you don’t have an English teacher, you can go online and log on when that teacher will be teaching English. You can log on to it in an interactive way,” he said. The platform covers every subject in the national curriculum, including English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Civic Education, Nigerian History, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Students can also access recorded lessons to revise or catch up on missed classes.
To remove cost barriers, the government has partnered with the Nigerian Communications Commission to provide zero-rated (free) data for users of the platform.“We have collaborated with the Nigerian Communications Commission. We have zero-rated data, free data, to log on to the site. You log on free, you get live teachers,” Alausa stated.
Alongside Inspire Live, the minister highlighted the Ignite platform, which helps teachers prepare lesson plans, access curriculum materials and improve their professional skills. He also noted that a Teacher Preparedness Programme is currently supporting nearly 50,000 educators.
The interventions come amid ongoing challenges of teacher shortages and high learner-teacher ratios in many public schools across the country.
