Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate and former Minister of Transportation, has attributed his loss in the 2022 All Progressives Congress presidential primary to advice he received from the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking on Mainland 98.3FM’s The Situation Room programme in Lagos on Friday, Amaechi said Buhari assured him in writing that he would be named the preferred candidate and instructed him not to campaign or engage in any political manoeuvring ahead of the contest.
“The first mistake that I made at that primary was that I listened to President Buhari. He said to me, ‘Don’t campaign. Don’t do anything. I will announce you as my candidate.’ He told me that. He put it in writing. When I write my book, I’ll put it out,” Amaechi stated.Amaechi explained that he trusted the assurance because Buhari was his boss and believed the endorsement would give him an edge over other aspirants.
As a result, he refrained from lobbying delegates and negotiating alliances with governors and other influential party figures.He said this decision ultimately worked against him, allowing then-aspirant Bola Tinubu to build the necessary coalitions and secure the APC presidential ticket.Amaechi reflected on the episode while discussing the circumstances of his defeat in the June 2022 primary.
