African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has cautioned that a Federal High Court judgment nullifying the party’s leadership and its 2027 presidential nomination could trigger serious unrest, potentially escalating to civil war if not handled carefully.
Amaechi made the remarks in an interview on Mainland 98.3 FM’s The Situation Room. He said that after news of the ruling broke, he quickly conferred with the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and its national chairman, David Mark. They agreed to urge supporters to remain calm.
“It could cause a civil war if not properly managed. When we heard the news, we quickly met, myself and the presidential candidate and the chairman of the party, and we said: ‘Please, lower the tempo’,” Amaechi stated.
The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, delivered the judgment last Thursday. It nullified the National Working Committee led by former Senate President David Mark and invalidated the process that produced Atiku Abubakar as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. The court also set aside the emergence of former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary and other decisions taken by the Mark-led leadership, including candidate nominations.
In addition, the court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognise decisions from the party’s 99th National Executive Committee meeting held on 27 July 2025. The suit was filed by Nafiu Gombe, a former ADC Deputy National Chairman (North-East), who challenged the process through which Mark and the caretaker committee assumed control of the party.
Amaechi insisted there is no internal rift within the ADC. He attributed the legal challenge to fear on the part of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming the APC views the ADC as its main opposition threat ahead of 2027. He also referenced documents and a video he said showed Gombe’s involvement in the leadership handover.
The former Rivers State governor and transportation minister stressed that the party would pursue legal remedies, including an appeal, while calling on members to avoid actions that could heighten tensions.
