A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State loyal to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has rejected its inclusion in Governor Hyacinth Alia’s recently announced campaign council.
The group, operating under the Austin Agada-led faction of the APC, questioned the decision of the Alia faction, headed by Benjamin Omale, to include stakeholders and National Assembly candidates aligned with Akume in the state campaign council without their consent.
Reacting to the development, the Director-General of the Benue Strategic Alliance for Tinubu 2027, Chief Akange Audu, issued a statement distancing the organisation and its members from the campaign structure.
According to Audu, the alliance was not consulted before the publication of the list and does not recognise any suggestion that its members are part of the Alia campaign council.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Benue Strategic Alliance for Tinubu 2027 categorically dissociates itself from the publication and rejects any claim that the individuals named are members of the purported Alia campaign structure,” the statement said.
Audu further alleged that party stakeholders who worked for the APC’s victory in the 2023 general elections had been sidelined by the current administration in the state, a situation he said contributed to divisions within the party.
He maintained that the alliance remained committed to mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 and would also support APC candidates for the National Assembly and Benue State House of Assembly who emerge through structures recognised by Senator Akume.
The group expressed concern over the socio-economic challenges facing residents of Benue State, arguing that the 2027 political process should focus on issues of governance, accountability, party unity and citizens’ welfare.
Audu also emphasised that the Benue Strategic Alliance for Tinubu 2027 operates as an independent political mobilisation platform whose identity and membership cannot be appropriated through unauthorised publications.
He therefore called on APC members, stakeholders, party executives and the public to disregard the campaign council list released by the Alia faction.
The latest disagreement underscores the continuing divisions within the Benue APC as competing factions position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
