Abia Police Disburse N9m Benefits to Families of 21 Fallen Officers

The Abia State Police Command has presented cheques worth more than ₦9 million to the families of 21 deceased police officers under the Group Life Assurance Scheme and the Inspector-General of Police Family Welfare Scheme.

The cheques, totalling ₦9,054,644.57, were presented on Friday at the command headquarters in Umuahia by the Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Wilfred, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police.

Speaking during the ceremony, Wilfred expressed sympathy to the bereaved families, acknowledging that financial support could never replace the lives of their loved ones or erase the pain of their loss.

He said the intervention reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and the continued support of families left behind by officers who died in service.

“Today, we are presenting a total of 21 cheques under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme, amounting to ₦9,054,644.57, for onward transmission to the families of our deceased officers,” he said.

The commissioner urged beneficiaries to view the gesture as evidence that the sacrifices of fallen officers are recognised and remembered by the Force.

According to him, the Nigeria Police remains mindful of its responsibility to care for the dependants of officers who dedicated their lives to serving the nation.

Wilfred also offered prayers for the deceased officers, asking God to grant them eternal rest and give their families the strength to cope with their loss.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Oyebuchi Gloria, widow of late Inspector Oyebuchi Henry Ndemeka, expressed appreciation to the Police Force and the Abia State Command for the support.

She said the financial assistance would help meet the needs of her family and children, while noting that no amount of money could truly compensate for the loss of her husband.

“Although this cheque cannot be compared to the life of my husband, on behalf of my family, I want to say thank you,” she said, while offering prayers for police authorities involved in the initiative.

Another beneficiary also commended the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force for the gesture, describing it as a source of support during a difficult period, while stressing that the memory and love of her late husband remain irreplaceable.

The presentation formed part of ongoing efforts by the Police Force to provide welfare support to the families of officers who died in active service.
