Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Vice-Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration postponed the implementation of tax collection under the newly enacted tax reform laws due to fears of losing the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso made the claim on Saturday while speaking at the inauguration of the NDC campaign council in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital. He said that although the tax reform bills had already been passed into law, the Federal Government was reluctant to begin full collection because of the potential political backlash ahead of the polls.
“The bill has been passed into law, but the Federal Government is now afraid of losing the election. That is why it has delayed the collection,” Kwankwaso stated. He warned that if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secures another term in 2027, Nigerians would face more aggressive and intrusive tax enforcement.
“As soon as they get a second chance, God forbid, Nigerians will suffer from different kinds of tax collection. They will start going from house to house, checking even under your bed to collect taxes,” he added.Kwankwaso also criticised the National Assembly’s handling of the tax bills. He alleged that the session for the approval of the tax bill was chaired by a lawmaker from Kano and that the Senate President deliberately stayed away to avoid association with the legislation.
“The worst part of it is that the session for the approval of the tax bill was chaired by one of us from Kano. Even the Senate President intentionally refused to attend because he did not want to be part of it,” he said.Promising an alternative approach if given the mandate, Kwankwaso said the NDC would scrap unnecessary taxes and prioritise quality education, including sponsoring children’s schooling.
He urged Nigerians not to give the APC a second chance, warning that its re-election would jeopardise the country’s future.
