2027: Keyamo Warns Against Violence Under Guise of Protecting Votes

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has cautioned Nigerians against taking up arms or resorting to violence under the pretext of protecting their votes in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, Keyamo accused some politicians of encouraging citizens and thugs to arm themselves and attack others while ensuring their own children remain safely abroad.

“After safely ferrying their children abroad, some unscrupulous politicians are encouraging hapless citizens and thugs to take up weapons to kill one another under the pretext of ‘protecting their votes’. That’s fine,” he said.

Keyamo referenced former President Muhammadu Buhari’s pre-2019 election warning, which he said he supported then and continues to support. He stated that anyone who resorts to self-help by taking up dangerous weapons and attacking others under the guise of protecting votes can be lawfully neutralised by security agents in the course of their duty.

“And the children of the politicians will be watching your foolishness from their safe haven somewhere in the world. Having been forewarned, you can then go ahead and exercise your options. CHIKENA,” Keyamo added.

The warning comes as political activities ramp up ahead of the polls. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for February 6, 2027.

Keyamo’s remarks also follow calls by some opposition figures for voters to protect their votes. The minister framed his statement as a reminder that security agencies are mandated to respond to any violent disruption of the electoral process.
