The Zamfara state government says it has recorded 38 cases of an unidentified illness in Shinkafi and Zurmi LGAs, prompting the deployment of an emergency response team to investigate the outbreak.
The cases, reported on October 29, were recorded
predominantly among adults in Shinkafi, with additional cases recorded in
Moriki, a community in Zurmi LGA.
In a situation report, the state ministry of health’s Public
Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) said affected residents presented
symptoms including fever, headache, loss of appetite, vomiting, body pains and
general weakness.
Preliminary clinical assessments identified malaria,
gastroenteritis and meningitis as possible causes of the illness. However, the
ministry said laboratory investigations were needed to determine the actual
cause.
The ministry said it had deployed a multidisciplinary
emergency response team led by Yusuf Abubakar, director of public health, to
investigate the cases, strengthen disease surveillance and prevent further
spread.
The medical teams are assessing patients at health
facilities in Shinkafi and Moriki, distributing essential drugs and medical
supplies, and collecting clinical samples for laboratory analysis in Sokoto.
Nafisa Maradun, the health commissioner, urged residents of
the affected communities to seek medical attention if they experience any of
the reported symptoms.
She also advised residents against self-medication and urged
them to cooperate with health officials as investigations and response
activities continue.
