Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigeria’s 36 state governors to stop relying solely on the Federal Government to resolve electricity challenges, stressing that states now have the legal authority to generate and distribute power under the Electricity Act 2023.
Speaking at the National Stakeholders Workshop on the Electricity Act 2023, held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja, Shettima, represented by Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia said reliable electricity is essential for building a competitive industrial economy.
“The Act empowers states to develop and regulate intrastate electricity markets within the constitutional framework. Governors can fix electricity without waiting for the Federal Government. The size and diversity of this nation demand decentralisation,” he stated.
Shettima highlighted Nigeria’s vast energy resources, citing solar potential in Sokoto, Borno and Katsina, gas reserves in Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa, and hydro opportunities in Niger and Kebbi.
He urged states to harness these resources to power agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare and education. He warned that legislation alone would not deliver electricity, urging states that have yet to establish their own electricity regulators to act swiftly.
“Electricity supply must become a shared responsibility, pursued with innovation and accountability across the federation,” he added.
