Abdulaziz Yari, director-general of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, says President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign will kick off in Kaduna on October 24.
Yari spoke with State House correspondents on Friday after
meeting with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he briefed the
president on preparations for the campaign and the proposed schedule for state
visits.
The former governor of Zamfara said the campaign council
would hold its inaugural meeting on October 14 at the State House Banquet Hall,
ahead of the campaign flag-off in Kaduna.
“The inaugural meeting is going to be done on the 14th of
this month; that’s next Wednesday, at the State House Banquet Hall, and by
God’s grace, on the 24th of October, we’re going to do our flag-off campaign in
Kaduna,” Yari said.
He added that Tinubu had approved the proposed schedule for
state visits, with Port Harcourt and Maiduguri next after Kaduna.
“We have outlined our state visits to each and every place
where we will go, and the president has approved them. So, we are going to hit
the ground running by the 24th of October,” he said.
Yari said the full schedule would be made public after the
campaign council’s inauguration.
Asked about Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 elections against
his key challengers, particularly Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic
Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Yari
said the president had established a strong political foothold across the
country.
He argued that winning the 2027 presidential election would
require candidates to build support in both northern and southern Nigeria
rather than rely on dominance in one region.
“If you have control of 80 percent of the south, if you
don’t have anything in the north, you cannot make it. If you have 80 percent of
control of the north, if you don’t have any state in the south, you cannot make
it,” he said.
Yari cited former President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral
performance, arguing that strong support in the north had not initially
translated into victory at the national level.
He claimed Tinubu had support in more than 10 states in the
south and more than 10 in the north.
The campaign council director-general also recalled Tinubu’s
past political ties with Atiku and Obi, saying the president had supported both
politicians at different times.
“Allah used him to support Atiku some time back and, at the
same time, to support Peter Obi. So, if Allah uses me to support you, there is
no how Allah will use you to bring me down,” he said.
Yari also defended the Tinubu administration’s economic
policies, saying the government had made progress in addressing the challenges
it inherited.
“We are not promising. We are doing it, and we are going to
continue,” he said.
