NAF Clarifies ATR Aircraft Casualty Figures

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has clarified conflicting reports on the number of people on board its ATR 42 aircraft, NAF 931, which crashed on Monday at Igbokoda in Ondo State.

Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, made the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

He said official records confirmed that 25 persons were on board, comprising 20 passengers and five active crew members.

Two non-active crew members were included among the 20 passengers.Ejodame explained that reports citing 32 persons likely stemmed from a misunderstanding of standard aviation terminology, such as the phrase “25 souls on board, inclusive of seven crew.”

According to him, this means a total of 25 persons, including the seven crew members, rather than 25 passengers plus an additional seven crew.On the civilians aboard the aircraft, he said they were family members of officers travelling to the same destination.

The NAF released the verified figures and names of those on board after search and recovery efforts and engagement with the affected families.

While continuing to mourn the tragic loss, Ejodame said the service sincerely appreciates the outpouring of sympathy, solidarity and support from Nigerians and well-wishers.
