Rotimi Amaechi, running mate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has warned that President Bola Tinubu risks arrest and prosecution by the International Criminal Court (ICC) if his administration continues to crack down on the opposition.
Speaking in a video address to ADC stakeholders, Amaechi cited international law provisions, noting that a threshold number of deaths linked to government actions could trigger ICC intervention.
He referenced the case of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who was detained over thousands of killings during his tenure.
“International law says there is a number of persons that must die at the hands of this government before Tinubu will be prosecuted by the ICC,” Amaechi said.
He added that not only the President but also senior officials such as the Chief of Army Staff and Inspector-General of Police could be held accountable if implicated in unlawful orders.
Amaechi stressed that Tinubu would not be able to evade responsibility, warning that international law enforcement could act even if the President attempted to leave Nigeria.
He urged Nigerians to resist intimidation, insisting that the government’s use of force was intended to frighten the opposition.
“When they shoot, it is to frighten you, and you must resist it,” he said.
