Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Advanced Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has questioned President Bola Tinubu’s decision to travel to Saudi Arabia to pray for Nigeria, insisting that such prayers can be offered within the country.
Makinde argued that there was no need for the President to embark on a foreign trip for spiritual purposes, stressing that prayers made in Nigeria are equally valid and effective. Speaking on the issue, he said Nigerian leaders should remain with the people and pray for the nation from within the country rather than travelling abroad.
“I read on social media that our President is travelling to Saudi Arabia to pray for Nigeria. Prayers are answered even in this country. We will stay here and pray for our country and leaders,” he said.
The governor maintained that leadership requires being present among citizens and sharing in their challenges, particularly at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with economic difficulties and insecurity.
According to Makinde, if the President wished to pray for the country, he could do so from Aso Rock, a church, a mosque or any other location in Nigeria without travelling overseas.
He added that the APM would not engage in foreign prayer journeys but would instead remain in the country and continue praying for Nigeria and its leaders.
Makinde’s remarks come amid ongoing public debate over the frequency of foreign trips by government officials, with some Nigerians expressing concerns about the necessity and cost of such travels during a period of economic hardship.
