Wabara Demands Probe of ₦15trn Coastal Highway Project

Former Senate President and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, has called for a thorough investigation into the ₦15 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, accusing the Bola Tinubu-led administration of breaching procurement rules and ignoring statutory requirements.

In a statement, Wabara questioned whether the contract was awarded in line with the Public Procurement Act and other legal frameworks.

He raised concerns about the project’s engineering design, environmental impact assessment, and legislative approvals, insisting that transparency and accountability must guide such a massive infrastructure undertaking.

The PDP BoT chairman criticised the government’s handling of the 750-kilometre highway, arguing that controversies surrounding its conception and execution highlight broader issues in the management of public projects under the APC-led administration.

Key issues flagged by Wabara include:

Contract award process — whether due process was followed.

Environmental assessment — adequacy of studies and approvals.

Highway realignment — changes to the route in response to climate and environmental concerns.

Transparency in funding — clarity on how public resources are being utilised.

“The secrecy, lack of public accountability and utter disregard for statutory frameworks are alarming and unacceptable in a democracy,” Wabara said, stressing that Nigerians deserve to know how contracts are awarded and funds spent.

He urged the Federal Government to provide clear answers and called for an independent review of the project’s conception, approval, and implementation.

According to him, the scale of resources committed to the coastal highway makes transparency essential, especially amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.
