United States President Donald Trump has reignited controversy by suggesting that Canada might “end up being the 51st state of the US,” citing trade disputes and what he described as unfair treatment of America by its northern neighbour.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, Trump accused Canada of exploiting the US economy through tariffs on American goods, particularly dairy products.
“Canada treats us very badly. They always have. Not anymore. It’s a whole different ball game now that Trump is in town,” he said, according to CTV News.
Trump claimed Canadian restrictions on dairy imports were excessive, quipping that tariffs applied to “anything past two bottles of milk.” He added:
“They’ll end up being the 51st state, because that’s the only way it works. We don’t need them, but they need us.”
The president also floated provocative ideas such as renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” and compared his remarks about Canada to his earlier interest in Greenland, saying the prospect “just adds to our beautiful plate.”
His comments come amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. Canadian officials have repeatedly rejected the notion of joining the United States.
In September, British Columbia Premier David Eby responded to Trump’s remarks by promising signs at border crossings declaring Canada would “never be the 51st state.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford also dismissed the idea earlier this year, insisting that Canadian sovereignty “is not for sale.” Ford said: “I can tell President Trump that will never, ever happen.”
Trump’s renewed rhetoric highlights the strain in US-Canada relations, with retaliatory tariffs and economic challenges fueling disputes. While his remarks drew applause from supporters at the rally, they have been met with sharp criticism across Canada.
