Christa Pike, a 50-year-old death row inmate in Tennessee, has regained consciousness after surviving a failed execution attempt last week, her lawyers confirmed on Tuesday.
Pike, sentenced to death for a 1995 murder committed as a teenager, received two lethal doses of pentobarbital but did not die. She was rushed to hospital, where she remained unconscious and on a ventilator before unexpectedly recovering.
Her legal team described her survival as “against all odds,” noting that while she is now speaking, her prognosis remains uncertain and a long recovery is expected.
They have renewed calls for Governor Bill Lee to commute her sentence to life imprisonment and are seeking a court order to preserve all evidence related to the failed execution.
The incident has reignited debate over the death penalty in the US. Tennessee has suspended executions pending an independent investigation, and the state’s prison chief has resigned.
Advocates, including the US Campaign to End the Death Penalty, say the case highlights systemic flaws and secrecy in execution procedures.
Medical experts suggest the failure may have been due to Pike’s small veins, which complicated IV insertion, or degraded drugs.
Her lawyers reported her arms turned purple and she felt burning during the procedure, indicating the drug may have leaked into tissue rather than entering her bloodstream.
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Pike is the first inmate to survive after being injected with lethal doses of execution drugs.
Her case drew attention as she would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. So far in 2026, 29 executions have been carried out in the US, all by lethal injection.
The death penalty remains abolished in 23 states, with moratoriums in three others.
