FCT Workers Embark on Indefinite Strike Over Labour Disputes

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has ordered all workers in the FCT Administration including those in the private sector to begin an indefinite strike from Wednesday.

The directive follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, over unresolved labour disputes and policy grievances affecting teachers.

Council Chairman, Knabayi Adalo, announced the decision in a communique after an emergency State Executive Council meeting, stating that the strike became necessary due to the administration’s failure to meet workers’ demands.

Among the key demands are:

Abolition of vacancy clause for teachers’ promotions, which the union says has caused career stagnation.Withdrawal of redeployment and demotion letters issued to directors under the Education Secretariat who benefited from the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers Act, 2022.

Reconsideration of 2025 eligible teachers to sit for promotion exams alongside the 2026 batch.Dissolution and reinstatement of management teams at the FCT Secondary Education Board (SEB) and Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB).

Adalo criticized the FCT Administration’s response as “dismissive and unacceptable,” noting that it ignored the issue of illegal redeployment of senior directors and failed to address the controversial vacancy clause. He directed that all schools, hospitals, offices, and government establishments across the FCTA remain closed until the union’s demands are met.

Affiliate unions in both public and private sectors have been instructed to ensure full compliance, with enforcement committees set up to monitor adherence.

Adalo assured workers that no one would face victimisation for participating in the strike, urging them to remain resolute until their grievances are addressed.
