Troops have arrested seven suspects over separate incidents involving an alleged attack on herders and the destruction of farmlands in Plateau state.
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, reported
that four suspects were arrested at about 1:20pm on October 19 in Trimishal
village, Ganawuri, Riyom LGA, over an alleged attack on herders.
The publication said the suspects are members of a militia.
“The sources said the four suspects were allegedly involved
in an attack on herders in the community,” Makama said.
“The suspects are currently in military custody for further
investigation and necessary action.”
Makama said troops also arrested three suspected herders
over the alleged destruction of farmlands in Marit village, Barkin Ladi LGA of
Plateau state.
According to Makama, security sources said the incident
occurred at about 7:31am on October 19, when troops deployed in Dorowa
responded to reports of farmland destruction in the community.
“The sources said the troops apprehended three suspects and
confiscated cattle allegedly linked to the incident,” Makama said.
“One motorcycle was also recovered during the operation.
“According to the sources, some armed herders reportedly
engaged the troops upon their arrival but escaped into surrounding bushes.
“The three suspects and the recovered items are currently in
military custody for further investigation and necessary action.”
The operation comes amid persistent tensions over farmland
destruction and farmer-herder disputes in parts of Plateau state.
