There’s No Evidence I Won 2023 Presidential Election – Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has acknowledged that there is no evidence to prove his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election, while still maintaining that he believes he was the rightful winner.

Obi made the comments in a recent interview with BBC Africa while discussing his long-standing assertion that the election was rigged. When asked whether he had evidence to support his claim of victory, he replied:

“There’s no evidence. Everything is not based on evidence.” He quickly added: “I won the election and that’s where I will end.”

The former Anambra State governor also addressed questions about his repeated claims of election rigging, despite the courts dismissing his legal challenges. “I don’t like going back to the past. I sustain what I said,” he stated.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress the winner of the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party came second, while Obi finished third. Both Obi and Atiku challenged the result at the Presidential Election Petition Court; their petitions were dismissed, and the Supreme Court later upheld Tinubu’s victory.

In the same interview, Obi defended his position on fuel subsidy, insisting he had not changed his stance despite criticism. He said his concern had always centred on corruption within the subsidy system:

“I talked about the corruption. The corruption is the problem of the subsidy.” On fighting corruption if elected, he said he would personally take charge, noting that reducing involvement by public officials and their families would cut the problem significantly.

Asked whether he would step down for a consensus opposition candidate ahead of the 2027 election, Obi rejected the idea.

“We don’t need to step down. We need to do the right thing,” he said, urging opposition parties to focus on mobilising more voters.
