The National Chairman of the Action Alliance (AA), Kenneth Udeze, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate and dismiss any officials found culpable in the alleged use of artificial intelligence (AI) to duplicate voters’ National Identification Numbers (NINs) in the national voter register.
Udeze described the alleged use of AI-generated images and duplicated NIN records as a serious threat to the credibility of both INEC and the 2027 general elections. In a statement he personally signed, the AA chairman backed calls for an independent and transparent forensic audit of the voter register, stressing that the integrity of the electoral database must be protected.
According to him, allegations of synthetic AI-generated images and duplicate NINs in the voters’ register, if verified, would amount to a major breach of public trust and could undermine confidence in the electoral process.
“The Action Alliance has noted the viral publication alleging synthetic AI-generated images and duplicate NINs in the National Register of Voters,” he said.
“If confirmed, this would represent a grave threat to the integrity of the 2027 elections and a breach of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023.”
Udeze called on INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan to immediately authorise a public third-party forensic audit of the register and make the findings available for public scrutiny. He also demanded the publication of a verifiable audit trail showing the clean-up and deduplication process, as well as the identification, investigation and dismissal of any staff involved in contaminating the register.
The AA chairman further urged INEC to collaborate closely with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to address the issue of duplicated NINs and strengthen the integrity of voter records.
Emphasising the need for transparency, Udeze maintained that internal corrective measures alone would not be sufficient.
“Internal cleanup is not enough. The register must be cleaned, credible, and open to public scrutiny before 2027,” he stated. He concluded that restoring public confidence in the voter register is essential to ensuring free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
