The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of three of the six Islamic clerics who were kidnapped by armed bandits while travelling to Talata Mafara in September.
The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Bello, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Gusau on Friday. He said the operation was the result of coordinated efforts among the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.
According to Bello, security agencies are continuing tactical operations to secure the release of the remaining three clerics still being held captive. He noted that ongoing efforts are being supported by intelligence obtained from local communities.
The clerics were abducted on September 12, 2026, after armed bandits intercepted their vehicle along the Dakko-Damri feeder road near the Sububu Forest in Bakura Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The victims were reportedly travelling to Talata Mafara to attend a special prayer session organised for the administration of President Bola Tinubu when they were kidnapped.
Security sources said the rescue operation was carried out through intelligence-driven coordination among security agencies, leading to the safe recovery of the three clerics without injury.
The rescued clerics have since undergone medical assessments and debriefing and are said to be in stable condition. Arrangements are being made for their formal handover to the Zamfara State Government and reunion with their families.
The abductors had reportedly demanded a ransom of N30 million for the release of the six clerics.
Police authorities assured the public that security operations would continue until the remaining captives are freed and those responsible are brought to justice. They also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to assist security agencies in combating banditry and other criminal activities in the state.
