Peter Obi: NDC Withdraws Recognition of Diaspora Chapters, Cites Court Ruling

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has withdrawn recognition of all its diaspora chapters, citing a court judgment that prohibits Nigerian political parties from establishing or operating branches outside the country.

In a statement issued on Sunday by National Publicity Secretary Osa Director, the party said the decision was taken in compliance with the ruling and in line with its commitment to accountability, transparency, and due process.

The NDC referenced the case of Prof. Ali Alao v. All Progressives Congress (APC) & Anor (Suit No. CV/187/2025), in which Justice Peter Kekemeke of the FCT High Court in Abuja held that no political party registered in Nigeria has the legal authority to establish, operate, or supervise chapters beyond the country’s territorial boundaries.

The court further declared that diaspora chapters of Nigerian political parties are illegal, unconstitutional, and not recognised under Nigerian law.

“In compliance with the judgement, the NDC is halting recognition of foreign chapters of the party, and all earlier recognitions are hereby withdrawn,” the statement said.

The party expressed appreciation for the support of its international members and supporters, particularly those backing its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

It noted the strong interest of Nigerians in the diaspora in the party’s candidates and encouraged them to sustain their engagement through appropriate and legal channels.

The NDC also stated that it has initiated a harmonisation process in jurisdictions where multiple groups exist, with the aim of bringing them under a single umbrella, while its legal department reviews the judgment for further guidance.
