Tensions escalated in Oyo State on Wednesday as the All Progressives Congress (APC) accused supporters of Allied People’s Movement (APM) governorship candidate, Bimbo Adekanmbi, of destroying campaign billboards belonging to Senator Sharafadeen Alli in Ibadan.
The Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation (SSACO) alleged that Adekanmbi’s supporters vandalised billboards in areas including Mokola, Sango, Monatan-Olodo Road, Odo-Ona, and the Toll Gate section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
SSACO’s spokesperson, Bisi Oladele, described the act as “barbaric and unacceptable,” warning that such violence undermines democracy.
Oladele further claimed the incident followed recent attacks on Alli’s wife and other APC candidates, accusing Governor Seyi Makinde and Adekanmbi of fearing electoral defeat in 2027.
The APC called on security agencies to investigate and prosecute those responsible, urging its members to remain calm and avoid retaliation.
In a swift rebuttal, APM spokesperson Yinka Oladoyinbo dismissed the allegations as baseless, insisting Adekanmbi is “a man of peace” with no ties to violence.
He accused the APC of spreading falsehoods to gain sympathy, stressing that Oyo residents have enjoyed “seven years of peaceful coexistence and development” under Governor Makinde.
Oladoyinbo urged security agencies to probe the claims thoroughly and assured APM supporters to continue their campaign peacefully. He maintained that the APC’s resort to “deception and blackmail” reflects its lack of credible programmes to win voter confidence.
