Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has directed the fumigation of the Igbokoda River and the distribution of health kits to residents following concerns over pollution from last week’s Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash.
The governor’s order came after complaints of a strong stench around the crash site in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, raising fears of environmental hazards and possible disease outbreaks.
In a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, Aiyedatiwa instructed the Ministries of Environment and Health to carry out extensive fumigation of the river and provide nose masks and other protective kits to residents.
The government also mandated Ilaje Local Government to arrange water tankers to supply potable water if the river is found unsafe for use.
“The arrangement will remain until a lasting solution is provided,” the statement noted. The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Air Force in recovery operations and safeguarding the welfare of affected communities.
The crash, which occurred on October 5, involved a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft with registration number NAF 931. All 25 people on board five crew members and 20 passengers lost their lives.
Recovery efforts have been hampered by the swampy terrain, with residents reporting worsening odors from the river.
Local monarch Oba Afolabi Odidiomo has urged both federal and state authorities to expedite recovery and address suspected contamination from decomposing remains and spilled aviation fuel.
The Nigerian Air Force has intensified search operations and set up a 12-member board of inquiry to investigate the incident, while the Federal Government has also ordered a probe.
