Okpebholo Threatens to Arrest Contractor Over Abandoned Benin-Abraka Road Project

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has threatened to arrest the contractor responsible for a section of the Benin-Abraka Road, accusing the firm of abandoning the project after receiving payment from the previous administration.

The governor made the statement on Friday while addressing members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Orhionmwon and Uhunmwode Local Government Areas during his ongoing tour aimed at strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, Okpebholo explained that he had wanted to fix the road but was limited by contractual agreements signed by the immediate past government.

He noted that the Benin-Abraka Road project was awarded to two contractors. One is making steady progress and has completed about 75 per cent of its section.

The second contractor, whom the governor alleged was linked to former Governor Godwin Obaseki, abandoned its portion despite having been paid.

“Following the agreement that was signed by Obaseki’s administration, that road construction project was paid for before I became governor. Despite the payment by the previous administration, the contractor still abandoned the road, allowing motorists to suffer untold hardship,” Okpebholo said.

The governor added that he had previously avoided speaking publicly about the issue but was forced to address it after hearing residents’ complaints during his visit.

“Those in the diaspora don’t know what is happening and for me as the governor, I never wanted to speak on the issue of this Benin-Abraka Road, but what I heard today has prompted me to speak on the issue. I am going to arrest that contractor,” he declared.
