Ogun Suspends Traditional Ruler Over Alleged Involvement in Partisan Politics

The Ogun State Government has suspended Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, with immediate effect over allegations that he engaged in partisan political activities.

The State Executive Council approved the suspension under Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021, pending a full investigation into the claims against the monarch.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, conveyed the decision in a letter dated October 20, 2026.According to the letter, the council acted after receiving several complaints about the traditional ruler’s conduct, including reports that he openly participated in partisan politics and publicised some of those activities.

The government stated that traditional rulers are prohibited from engaging in partisan politics under both customary law and statute. It warned that such actions could damage the dignity of the traditional institution and disrupt peaceful coexistence among residents of different political affiliations.

The suspension was described as necessary in the interest of peace, order and good governance in Iselu Kingdom while the allegations are investigated.

As conditions of the suspension, Oba Akinyemi was ordered to vacate the palace immediately and stay away from it for the duration of the suspension. He was also barred from presenting himself or claiming recognition as the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom.

In addition, he was prohibited from wearing or using any crown, beaded items, staff, irukere or other traditional paraphernalia associated with the office of an Oba during the suspension period.

The monarch was further directed to make himself available promptly for any meeting or sitting called by the state government as part of the investigation.

Copies of the letter were forwarded to the Secretary of Yewa North Local Government and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, for their information and necessary action.
