Ogun NNPP Candidate Withdraws Indigeneship Suit Against Yayi

The Ogun State governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Comrade Akinbola Rotham, has explained his decision to withdraw a legal suit challenging the eligibility of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, to contest the 2027 governorship election.

Rotham said the withdrawal of Suit No. FHC/AB/CS/135/2026 was motivated by the need to advance the Ogun West agenda and ensure unity in the state’s political development.

“Senator Yayi and I are both sons of Ogun West and contestants in the 2027 governorship election. I strongly believe that the collective aspiration of Ogun West to produce a governor after 50 years of waiting is greater than any individual ambition,” Rotham stated.

Focus on Competence Over IndigeneshipRotham argued that governance should be driven by competence, capacity, character, and accountability rather than divisive debates over indigeneship.

He emphasized that democracy must mature beyond controversies about birthplace or ancestry.

The NNPP candidate stressed that his decision was consistent with the party’s philosophy of constructive engagement. He described Adeola as his “brother” and called for healthy competition that strengthens unity rather than division.

“Other political parties are not our enemies; they are sister political parties. Our responsibility is not simply to oppose for the sake of opposition, but to engage constructively whenever such cooperation can advance the interests of our people,” he said.

No Financial InducementRotham clarified that his withdrawal was not influenced by money or political settlement, insisting it was based solely on principle and conviction.

He acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s political leadership and said he wanted to avoid unnecessary distractions that could undermine Ogun West’s broader interests.

Commitment to 2027 ContestDespite withdrawing the suit, Rotham reaffirmed his commitment to the 2027 governorship race, pledging to contribute to Ogun State’s development.

“This is not about one man. It is about our people. It is not about personal ambition. It is about collective destiny. It is not about division. It is about unity and progress,” he said.
